V1 2.22 FFOD
V2 2.17/2.33 FFOD
V3 1.24/1.37 FFOD
V4 2.48 FFOD
V5 3.31 FFOD
Acoustic driving and very angry versions of the song which would go onto be the center-point to the BITUSA LP. V1 has a similar feel to “Vietnam” (see below). The rest of the versions are close to the acoustic version from the Lost Masters series, but do show the general development of the song and contain some vocals which didn’t make it to the final release.
CLUB SOUL CITY 0.55 FFOD
LOSIN KIND Variant of Highway
Patrolman 4.47 LMI
Acoustic Demo “The Answer” 5.13 FFOD
Losin Kind shows us an early view of the couple from Tom Joad’s Highway 29, in an outtake clearly developed into the TJ track. One of the differences, however, is at the end we meet Nebraska’s Highway Patrolman, through the fugitive’s eyes.
CHILD BRIDE 5.22 LMI
Was said to be the third in the trilogy of “Highway Patrolman” and “Losin Kind” with yet another point of view on the same story, but is an early version of Working On The Highway.
DOWNBOUND TRAIN 2.22 LMI
early demo 1.08 FFOD
JOHNNY 99 #1 3.50 FFOD
#2 3.26 FFOD
More refined versions than the early take on the Pre Nebraska Tape. Acoustic demos date from Fall 1981.
LOVE IS A DANGEROUS THING 3.22 FFOD
PINK CADILLAC 5.21 LMI
Acoustic and moody – very different to the upbeat version recorded for BITUSA
DREAM BABY 0.32 LMI
This is a Roy Orbison song
FADE TO BLACK 2.53 FFOD
Close relative of “Fade Away“. These are full versions and pretty much complete – quite atmospheric.
PRECIOUS MEMORIES 1.10 LMI
NEBRASKA ALT #1/2 1.09/1.05 LMI
Was originally called Starkweather
RED RIVER ROCK 0.53 FFOD
This track is an alternate title for Highway Patrolman
USED CARS #1 3.14 FFOD
#2 2.35 FFOD
#3 2.36 FFOD
VIETNAM 5.12 FFOD
Lyrically a very early version of “Shut Out The Lights“, but also sound and feel wise has a connection with V1 of “Born In The USA” (demo version above).
Recorded originally at Holmdel, NJ up to and on 3/1/82 as a demo, attempts to improve the stark quality failed and the album was released as originally recorded. Bruce did record all the tracks again, solo in the studio, but these sessions have never emerged, yet.
With the release of The Lost Masters Vol 1, we get to hear one of the original Nebraska demo tapes. Most of the tracks on the tape are indeed the same as those eventually released on the Nebraska LP, but there are some excellent out-takes, as detailed above.
15 track demo for Nebraska is also known to exist with electric versions of at least 8 of the Nebraska songs, which were recorded in the early days of the Born In The USA sessions. In fact there are several “Nebraska Demo” tapes some of which will hopefully see the light of day soon. Other songs recorded at these sessions included Glory Days and Downbound Train.
