THUNDER ROAD 4.44
10TH AVENUE FREEZE OUT 3.08
BORN TO RUN 4.28
SHES THE ONE 4.27
MEETING ACROSS THE RIVER 3.11
THUNDER ROAD V1 minor lyric changes 4.35 BIS/WAR
THUNDER ROAD V2 solo acoustic 4.35 BIS/WAR
THUNDER ROAD V3 sax intro 5.22 ROU/WAR
V1 – is the full band version. The girls name is Chrissie not Mary as on the released version.
V2 – an all time classic, one of the best unreleased out-takes of them all.
V3 – the sax is more prominent throughout but especially on the intro. The circulating tapes of this version are poor quality.
NIGHT 2.51 VAFH/WAR
The vocal is double tracked.
V1 – includes strings 6.25 URT/WAR
V2 – different lyrics 6.43 WAR
V3 – alt string version 6.31 DDITV
V3 is by far the best quality and differs from V1. Two other versions exist, one with different lyrics in the third verse, and one early version with bluffed lyrics throughout the second half of the song.
BORN TO RUN V1 dbl tracked vocal 4.33 BIS/WAR
BORN TO RUN V2 strings added 4.30 BIS
BORN TO RUN V3 diff mix 4.23 BIS
BORN TO RUN V4 diff mix 4.21 BIS/WAR
V1 has vocal dubbed on at the start of verses 1 and 2.
V2 has no chorus line backing and the bass level is raised between verses 3 and 4.
V3 the chorus line level is raised on verses 1, 2 and 4.
V4 the chorus line level is raised only on verse 4 at the start.
All the versions are essentially different mixes of the same track.
SHES THE ONE diff lyrics 6.17 BIS/WAR
Some lines in this version were later used in Backstreets. Early title for the song was “Virgin Summer Nights“. Track begins with just acoustic guitar.
MEETING ACROSS THE RIVER
(AKA “THE HEIST“) 3.11 ROU/WAR
The horn varies from the released version, intro to track suggests Take 16.
JUNGLELAND strings added 9.34 URT/WAR
(tail section only) 1.03 BIS/WAR
strings version (alt) 9.36 DDITV
The string version was obviously recorded at the same time as the Backstreets string version and was probably one of the very early versions. The alternate strings version is of stunning quality and has no guitar solo’s.
A LOVE SO FINE (INST) 3.47 BIS/WAR
Dates from October 1974. Backing track used on “So Young And In Love”
A NIGHT LIKE THIS
Uncirculated track recorded 16/10/74 according to the studio log
LINDA LET ME BE THE ONE V1 4.32 VAFH/WAR
V2 4.21 TRACKS
May have been the last song ruled out from inclusion on the LP. V2 was recorded 28/6/75 and features a different intro and part of the sax solo in V1 is missing. The Tracks version has a stronger vocal.
LONELY NIGHT IN THE PARK (Uncirculated)
Was considered for the LP and several takes were recorded.
SO YOUNG AND IN LOVE 3.45 TRACKS
Recorded 6/1/74?. This is a version of “A Love So Fine“, with lyrics on top of that previously known instrumental, and dates (if you believe the liner notes on TRACKS) from way before the Born To Run sessions proper. Current thinking is that the date should be October 1974. This version contains some lyrics which turn up again in Night.
WALKING IN THE STREET
(AKA “LOVERS IN THE COLD“) 3.58 BIS/WAR
Similar in style to Thunder road – with incomplete lyrics. According to recent information, this track was only played and recorded the one time, and the master tape could not be found for the release of Tracks, it may be lost.
AIN’T GONNA LOSE IT THIS TIME – Known from lyric sheet with chord progression
HERE SHE COMES
LIVING IN THE GETTO
LOVE AND DEFIANCE
THE VIOLENT ONES
Born To run was the first track recorded at 914 studios in May to July 1974, and A Love So Fine dates from October sessions at this studio. It is known that Jungleland, Backstreets and She’s The One were also recorded at 914 Studios, in fact the recording sessions for the album started with Jungleland, but Bruce was still working on the lyrics for the song on October 13th 1974 as recorded by an interview at that time.
All the album tracks except Born To Run were re-recorded at The Record Plant from April to August 1975. The last track to be completed was She’s The One, which was being laid down as Jungleland was being mixed. One final point of interest, 10th Avenue Freeze Out was originally titled “Scooter And The Big Man“.
